Tamil cinema industry is facing a piquant situation.
Every Friday 3 or more mainly small films are hitting the screens. Next Friday (Dec 17) there are four new releases- Easan, Aatanayagan, Nil Gavani Chellathe and Vaada Poda.
Thangaraj, a leading Madurai based theatre booking agent says: "Can Tamil cinema afford to have four releases a week? It is suicidal as more number of releases is eating into the business of previous week release. Recently a good film with positive talk like Nandalala was not given a decent run to pick up and was pushed out of the theatres by newer releases".
8 more films are waiting for release in the remaining two Friday's (Dec 24 & 31) of this year. The plight of producers big or small is pathetic. A leading production house like Lakshmi Movie Makers, took nearly a year to release (Dec 17) their Aatanayagan, due to lack of proper distributors and theatres.
A theatre owner confirmed: "These small films with hardly any publicity is not able to attract audiences. These days due to lack of audiences we had to stop screening, causing us heavy losses. Now all over Tamil Nadu theatre owners are showing 4 or 2 different films in their daily quota of four shows."
