Preceding the 62nd Republic Day, the President's office announced the list of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awardees for the year. The awardees honoured for their contributions to their respective fields of work also include talents from the movie industry. The list of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri recipients for this year from the movie industry are:


Padma Vibhushan

A. Nageshwara Rao

One of the veteran actors in the Telugu film industry, Nageshwara Rao started his career with Dharmapatni in 1941. Nageshwara Rao, one of the early Telugu movie industry doyens, created Tollywood after it parted ways from the Tamil movie industry in the undivided Madras Presidency. A recipient of many honours like the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, Kalimamani and seven Filmfare awards, A.Nageshwara Rao had a 69 yearsstint in acting.

Padma Bhushan

Zahur Khayyam

Veteran music composer Khayyam is famous forhis music in Kabhi Kabhie (1977) and Umrao Jaan (1982). A world war II veteran, Khayyam was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2007 for his contributions to music. Khayyam's last music for Bollywood was in 2006 for Yatra. He was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award in 2010.

Shashi Kapoor

Hailing from the Kapoor family, Shashi Kapoor started his career as a child artist in his elder brother Raj Kapoor's movies. He was a leading star in the 70s and 80s, when he gave the all time hits Deewar, Do Aur Do Paanch and Namak Halaal. Shashi Kapoor also won the National Award for his performance in New Delhi Times (1986) and Muhafiz (1993).

Waheeda Rehman

74-year old Waheeda Rehman hailing from Tamil Nadu, started her career with Telugu movies in the early 50s. Noticed by director Guru Dutt, she was introduced to Hindi cinema, with the 1956 movie CID. Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) are the veteran actress's other notable movies. Of late, Waheeda Rehman had also appeared in Rang De Basanti and Delhi 6.

S. P. Balasubrahmanyam

Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam, known as SPB in the movie industry, has sung songs in 12 Indian languages in a career spanning 45 years. Hailing from Nellore, SPB was awarded the National Award for playback singing a record six times. Apart from playback singing, SPB has also appeared in a number of Tamil, Telugu and Kannada movies. He was a Padma Shri recipient in 2001.

Shaji N. Karun

A National Award winning Malayalam film director and cinematographer, Shaji. N. Karun came in the limelight with his movies Piravi, Vanaprastham and Kutty Srank, which won National Awards in 1989, 1999 and 2010 respectively.

Girish Kasaravalli

Filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli is considered to be one of the pioneers in establishing parallel cinema in the Kannada film industry. This veteran film maker has won four National Awards for his movies Ghatashraddha (1977), Tabarana Kathe (1986), Thaayi Saheba (1997) and Dweepa (2001). Kasaravalli, a gold medalist from the Film and Television Institute in Pune, was also a President's Silver Lotus Award recipient for his short film Avashesh, which was made for his college assignment.

Tabu

Debuting in 1985 as Dev Anand's daughter in Hum Naujawan, Tabu went on to win two National Awards for her roles in Maachis and Chandni Bar in later years. Tabu is known for her preference to act in low budget art movies over commercial biggies. Tabu also holds the record of winning the Filmfare's Critics Award four times.

Jayaram

The multi-talented Jayaram, apart from his appearances in Malayalam and Tamil movies, is also a percussionist and mimicry artist. Known for his comic and serious acting, Jayaram has won a number of State film awards. Jayaram's son Kalidasan is a child artist and has won a National Award (Best Child Artist) for his performance in Ente Veedu Appoontem (Malayalam).

Usha Uthup

Usha Uthup, a popular playback and pop singer, has sung in a record 16 Indian languages. Beginning her career at age 9 singing for Radio Ceylon, her songs went to on to become chart busters in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Uthup has also appeared in movies and presides as a judge in a number of TV reality shows.

Kajol Devgn

Shooting to fame with her 1993 movie Baazigar, Kajol went on to appear in some all time favourites in Bollywood such as Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and My Name is Khan. A three time Filmfare best actress awardee, Kajol's recent movie My Name is Khan was longlisted for the 83rd Academy Award nominations.

Irrfan Khan

Starting his career in television serials, Irrfan Khan was known for his performances in The Namesake, The Warrior and the Academy Award winner Slumdog Millionaire. Irrfan has also bagged a role in the upcoming Spider Man movie to be released in 2012.
