The building which houses the office of Nadigar Sangam, otherwise known as the South Indian Cine Artistes’ Association (SICAA), is facing demolition next month as a brand-new building would take its place with several storeys in it.
The Habibullah Road premises has more than 1300 artistes as its members from the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada film industries known as Kollywood, Tollywood, Mollywood and Sandalwood (in that order) in filmy parlance. Besides them, many small-screen artistes and stage artistes are also part of the Sangam.
The late and legendary MGR and Sivaji Ganesan had been presidents of the Sangam. It was during Sivaji’s tenure in 1979 that the present structure was built to house the office of the Sangam. It has a couple of huge auditoriums, one named after Swami Sankaradoss and another after the late filmmaker Chinnappa Thevar. It also has a gym in it and is occupying an area of around 45,600 square feet.
The new building is likely to be completed in the next 2-3 years, it was decided at the executive council meeting of the Sangam held under the leadership of the present president, actor Sarath Kumar. Till such time, the Sangam would be functioning from a new building situated opposite the Sangam, it was informed.
