This living legend and Mollywood icon will have the celebration as a private affair, though his fans have been demanding a very big celebration at Thiruvananthapuram, his home city.
Lalettan, as he is affectionately known among millions of Malayalees all over the globe, was voted the best known of the Keralites in a recent poll. The only actor who made the biggest director of Indian commercial cinema, Mani Ratnam to say “Hereafter I will never work with a man of whom I am a fan, coz, I often forgot to say cut while directing him” is the actor who has been considered for the National Award for the maximum number of times in India. He has already won 4 so far, 3 for his acting and one for his production house.
This Robert De Niro of Indian cinema (according to Ram Gopal Varma,) will have his fifty first birthday celebrations at his home in Chennai in the presence of his few friends and relatives including his wife Suchithra, and children Pranav and Maya. In the evening, the star's friends including director Priyadarshan, M G Sreekumar, Ashok Kumar, Manianpillai Raju and Co, are planning a rendezvous at a secret getaway near Chennai.
In a sparkling career of more than three decades, Mohanlal nourished the Indian screens with some spectacular performances in around three hundred movies including ‘Uyarangalil’ (1985) T.P. Balagopalan M.A. (1986), Padamudra (1988), Kireedam (1989), Bharatham (1991), Vaanaprastham (1999), Kalapani (1995), Iruvar (1997), Thanmathra (2005) and Bhramaram (2010), to name a few. He has won nine Kerala State Film Awards including six Best Actor awards. In 2001, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian cinema.
He was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the Territorial Army in 2009 and this was a first in the history of Indian cinema that an actor was conferred an honorary Army rank. In 2010, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit bestowed an honorary doctorate upon him.
