What are your expectations from the film?
No filmmaker can make a film without conviction in what he does. I have done my job. Now it is up to the audience to take it to the next level. Of course I have positive vibes and my expectations are high.
How do you react when people talk about the excessive violence in the film?
Well, the film is all about emotions and what a man goes through when his family is attacked and killed. It's not a mindless gory violence. The audience ends up learning about the justification of it. Suriya has performed brilliantly as Suri.
What is your view about Suriya as an actor?
I have seen Ghajini and Kaakha Kaakha and his energy stayed with me long after I saw the films. He has the ability to speak just with his eyes. He has done a great job in my film. I can tell you that he has already created a buzz in Bollywood and the film and media circles already know about him and his range of acting. Everyone has a high regard for him.
Your characters remain in memory long after the film is over. How do you do the casting?
Once I decide the subject I am on the lookout for actors who can lead audiences through the story. It's all about the subject matter. I choose my actors from the films I see and who I meet.
Are you going to make another bio pic this time on Veerappan?
Yes we have been working on it but it will take some time. I am not starting on it right away.
What do you think about the current trend of directors turning actors in Kollywood?
It depends on the film. There are films made with stars and others with actors. If people come to see a particular star which is the brand of the film then you need stars for the movie. If it's a concept based film depending largely on the subject matter then it doesn't matter who acts in it. The audience is open to watching the film, whether it's the director who acts or anyone else.
