It's time for 'start...camera...action' as the shooting for the much-hyped film 'Rana', starring Tamil Superstar Rajnikanth in three roles, commenced in the city today.

''I am thrilled to be part of Rana but I am tensed to do a period film,'' 60-year-old Rajnikanth said as he emerged out of the AVM studios where the shooting commenced.

Rana is a film that has a portion set in the 17th century and Bollywood damsel Deepika Padukone plays the female lead opposite Rajni in the film. ''It is a challenging task to do a period film.

I am sure we will pull it off,'' Rajinikanth said. In his illustrious film career spanning more than four decades, Rajnikanth would have done various roles like hero, villain, comedy and even devotional roles.

However, for the first time he would be doing a period film. ''Rana is a big budget film. I am doing a triple role,'' he said, adding, ''for the first time I am doing a period film.'' Exuding confidence, Rajni said ''with fan's blessings Rana should do well.''

The film was being directed by K S Ravikumar and Produced by Rajni's daughter Soundarya's Ochre Studios in association with Eros International.

The cinematography would be done by Ratnavelu and music for the film would be scored by maestro A R Rahman. A huge set resembling the palace of 17th century was erected at AVM Studios in Chennai, where Rajnikanth appeared for shoot.

''It is an interesting story and I enjoy being part of it,'' Rajnilanth, whose previous film 'Enthiran', surpassed all records at the box office collections, said. Meanwhile, Soundarya Rajnikanth was quite optimistic of 'Rana' coming out well.

''I hope it will come out well. It will be a treat for Rajni's fans,'' she says. The Rajnikanth-Ravikumar combine was described as the most successful combination in the Tamil film industry. And the expectations from the combine, would no doubt be sky high as they had earlier churned out several hit films like 'Padayappa' and 'Muthu'.

Eminent Producer Panju Arunachalam sounded the clap board and former Tamil Nadu Minister R M Veerappan switched on the camera, while Rajni's mentor and popular director K Balachander directed the first shot at AVM studios.
