Yesterday is the birthday of Padmapriya, the dusky beauty of Kollywood.Tamil cinema joins her fans in wishing her a very happy birthday.
Padmapriya, who made her acting debut in Malayalam, made her mark in Mollywood acting with top heroes Mohanlal, Mammootty, Suresh Gopi and Jayaram before she got introduced in Tamil through director Cheran's Thavamai Thavamirundhu. Tall and slim, with a posh and urban look, Padmapriya is strikingly different from her contemporaries in Kollywood; her onscreen image also differs from those of other actresses. She chose to display her talents rather than her physical assets to rise to the top. Glamour is one of her powerful weapons, but the way she carries herself on screen and her outstanding acting skills established her exclusive style.
Thavamai Thavamirundhu showcased her as a simple yet bold college girl. The film was a box office hit, and Padmapriya did not get stuck with that stereotype. She looked her sensational best in her next, Pattiyal. Mirugam, directed by first-timer Saami, which attracted the attention of the whole industry for its controversial theme, showed her in a totally deglamorized appearance and brought her good recognition. Satham Podaathey, her next biggie with director Vasanth, put her on an even higher pedestal. As the helpless wife of a lying sterile alcoholic, Padmapriya again proved herself as heroine material with her great acting. Her performance as Neeli, the tribal warrior, in Mammootty's Pazhassi Raja won her many accolades and awards. Padmapriya also made her Bollywood debut opposite Siddharth in Chandan Arora's Striker.
She is a big name in Malayalam Cinema, where she has done numerous challenging roles. She has even acted under Adoor Gopalakrishnan, one of India’s finest directors. A former risk consultant at GE Financial, Padmapriya is one among the few who have made it big by taking a great risk.
Of course, all her performances can be partly credited to her training in Bharatanatyam. She learnt the art of stage managing her talent through her exposure and victory in the Miss Andhra contest in 2001. Currently, she is busy with Talkies, Seniors, Aan Piranna Veedu and Achante Aanmakkal in Malayalam. She will also made her debut in Bengali this year with Aparajitha.
Let us wish you happy birthday once again and all the very best, Padmapriya!
