Manmadhan Ambu is a class comedy film proving the importance of good script. There is no violent villain making scary gestures, no kuthu song with an item girl dance and ear bleeding punch lines claiming the hero to be the next superman saving the world. The story is simple, and portrayed elegantly.
The suspicious lover Madhavan hires a detective to watch his girlfriend Trisha who is cruising on a grand ship. The detective Kamal Haasan wins the girl. How he does it and why is the suspense of the film. The whole film is comedy tainted with hilarious one-liners making one laugh his heart out.
All the characters in the film, including the diseased friend character played by Ramesh Aravind, the Deepa character played by Sangeetha and Urvasi’s role all fit snugly into the script. The character casting is a great plus point of this film. Everybody acts so naturally as if they were born for playing those characters. Trisha has a marvelous role in this film after “Vinaithandi Varuvaya”.
Trisha plays the role of a leading Tamil actress in the film just like her real self. Her expressions and poise acting makes the audience see a new Trisha which she hasn’t expressed in any other films earlier. Kamal and director Ravikumar combination have always worked great. It is the same with this film also.
Tamil fans who are fed up of our heroes and heroines dancing in the crowded streets of some foreign land find the beautiful cruise shown in this film truly awesome. Hearts up to Manush Nadan, the cinematographer. Devi Sri Prasad’s music is a great plus point to the film. The Thagudu Thattam piece alone is an example for his understanding of the mass.
Kamal has proved his great acting skills once again. The maestro has a magic sack of talents which will never go empty. Even his small gestures add to the reality of the character. Manmadhan Ambu is a rare genre of comedy which should not and cannot be missed by any normal filmgoer. It is undoubtedly one of the best films of the year and has come as a grand Christmas treat to Tamil fans.
